Gallery 1957 is pleased to present a solo booth of work by Ghanaian multidisciplinary artist Serge Attukwei Clottey at Untitled Art Fair on Miami Beach. Dubbed by the artist as the “Attukwei Duct Tape Paintings”, the works on view are portraits rendered in duct tape and oil paint on cork. Continuing his focus on materials and identity the Duct Tape paintings, using the industrial material and textured cork base, implicate the artist’s connection to his hometown of Labadi, Accra (Ghana) and the physical realities encountered. Our Untitled Art Fair presentation is in tandem with the artist’s showcase of work and performance at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, South Beach during Miami Art Week.
Attukwei Clottey will perform and debut a new soundscape installation titled The Bodies Left Behind (2021) as well as a curated selection of sculptures installed throughout the iconic South Beach hotel as part of the Hotel’s “Art For Good” initiative. Attukwei Clottey describes his choreographic process as a particularly improvisational one, taking cues from the props, surroundings and the audience.
This performance addresses issues of sustainability, consumption, globalization and migratory patterns and is curated by Neville Wakefield, artistic director of Elevation1049 and Desert X.
Attukwei Clottey’s solo presentation comes after successful solo exhibitions at Gallery 1957 in 2016 and 2021 in Accra and London respectively, in 2018 with Lawrie Shabibi Gallery, Dubai and in 2021 with Simchowitz, Los Angeles.
