Creating to transform otherwise worthless materials into encounters of value, Owusu’s sculptural paintings included in the group show demonstrate alchemical and abstract interpretations. Owusu reimagines kente motifs, reconciling the complexities of our histories through the interconnected concepts of capital, exchange, currency, and design.
Weaving and textile culture throughout history has been used as a means of expression and resistance. While Owusu takes kente forms detaches from them their traditional symbolism, Kennedy deploys the kente as a canvas to be embroidered upon with beads, sequins, velvet cut outs and thread.
