Amet Kukubor - Reflections: In Stages: Accra, Gallery I

Comprising acrylic painting on canvas, this exhibition marks the exploration of the ways of living through generations until today. With this new exhibition with the gallery, Kukubor creates space for possibility with the audience to predict what the future might look like. Reflections: In Stages explores the socio-economic state of present day Ghana and how we are socialised into forming our identities through historical moments, societal pressures and aspirations; while touching on the tug-and-pull between public and private spaces, fashion, leisure, history, media and information transmission. This new work comprises an undercoat and overcoat, with some portions of the main subject left untouched to expose the first coat- a style adopted to communicate the great influence our surroundings have on us, and how we are in one way or another, merged with each other and our immediate environment.

Having lived in numerous vicinities in Accra over the years, Kukubor’s work has been heavily imprinted by the immense pool of memories of the different people and environments he’s encountered. He shares ideas and stories that celebrate existence, invoke thought and spark open-minded discussions. His technique employs expressionism and impressionism to depict his bitter-sweet narratives. His application of paint with squeegees of different sizes results in short tiles of acrylic paint, with which he forms his subjects.
