Amoako Boafo's 'Blank Stare' Acquired by Tate at 1-54 Marrakech 2025

Gallery 1957 is delighted to announce that Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo has been acquired by the Tate, London, UK.

Tate has acquired Blank Stare (2021), an oil on paper painting measuring 100 x 70 cm. The work was selected during the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in Marrakech by Gregor Muir, Director of Tate’s Collection, and Osei Bonsu, Curator of International Art, as part of the Tate’s Africa Acquisitions Committee Catalyst Fund, supported by 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, the artist, and Gallery 1957.

Amoako Boafo is renowned for his groundbreaking portraiture, which elevates Black figures within the tradition of portrait painting. His expressive use of colour and texture transforms the relationship between the subject and viewer, creating intimate, yet powerful connections. Boafo’s portraits are celebrated for their focus on confidence, strength, and presence, contributing to a wider understanding of Black identity within contemporary art.

We are honoured to continue supporting his groundbreaking contributions to contemporary African art and look forward to seeing his legacy expand even further.
