Hawa Awanle Ayiboro’s Empowering Journey and Art Featured in The Guardian

We are proud to share that Hawa Awanle Ayiboro’s remarkable journey and upcoming solo exhibition, Fine Feathers Don’t Make Fine Birds, have been featured in The Guardian. The article, written by Saeed Kamali Dehghan, explores Ayiboro’s personal story, highlighting her escape from a forced child marriage at the age of 12 and how her experiences have shaped her powerful art today.

The solo exhibition, opening on 13th February 2025 at Gallery 1957 in Accra, marks a significant moment in Ayiboro’s artistic career. It showcases her exploration of gender, survival, and the often-overlooked contributions of women in Ghana’s informal economy, especially kayayei women and sex workers. Ayiboro uses her vibrant, blue-toned paintings to challenge societal norms, reflecting the resilience of women who have long been marginalized.

We’re honored to have Ayiboro’s important work featured in such a prestigious publication, with The Guardian recognizing her unique voice and the empowering message of her art. This exhibition not only highlights Ayiboro’s creative journey but also brings attention to the broader social issues faced by women in Ghana today.
